WISE President's Blog - September 2015

Fall semester(s) at WISE are starting! Where did the summer go? For WISE learners just back from vacation there is still time and space to register for classes. Check your schedule on wisefall2015.sched.org to see what is available. Only sign up for classes which you will be able to attend – be considerate of those on waiting lists! Tips for getting ready: · Update your print and iPhone fall calendars. Carefully note that Monday classes in September start on Monday, September 21. There are no classes on September 14 and 23 (Jewish holidays). · Pick up suggested books at the Assumption Book Store, or order them for your electronic reader. · Send in your parking permit form and check for $15 to the WISE Office, Assumption College, 500 Salisbury St., Worcester, MA 01609. After a week, go in person to the Assumption College Public Safety Office in Kennedy with your automobile registration to pick up your parking sticker. You will be fined if you park without a sticker! Tips for first day in class:
  • Wear your name tag to class. Introduce yourself to new and old members sitting near you – before or after class.
  • Don’t be afraid to participate in class discussions, but always respect other’s viewpoints/opinions.
  • Listen carefully to announcements from the Class Assistant. Consider volunteering to be a Class Assistant in the future.
If this sounds like a Grandma chatting with her youngest grandson who is entering the freshman class at Andover High School – it is! All of the above except for the parking permit… That will happen in Junior year. It’s such fun to go “back to school”! More Tips:
  • Join a WISE Committee. Here’s your opportunity to help shape the future of WISE. We are soon to embark on an exciting enhanced “Community Outreach Initiative” – and we need you to help us succeed. Committees and Committee Chairs are listed on page 2 of our organization chart on our updated website: Assumption/WISE.edu. Call or email the Committee Chair, attend a meeting as a guest, and join in.
  • Attend our monthly Special Events. Each month we sponsor one of the following: a brown bag lunch, holiday and annual luncheon programs, and fall and spring day trips. On October 21 WISE will embark on a day trip to Doris Duke’s house, “Rough Point,” and the historical 17th C. Synagogue in Newport, RI. Check the WISE website calendar and watch for WISE flyers sent to you via email for details.
  • Sign up for the WISE Magical Rhine River Cruise, October 2016, managed by Collette Travel. The sooner you reserve a cabin, the better – the ship is filling up quickly. Chris and I have sent in our deposit and would love to have you join us! Just follow the directions on the registration form in the brochure which each of you received in the mail this August.
On a sad note we have learned that Sam Pickens, a well-loved group leader (8 courses over the 16 years of his loyal membership in WISE) died on August 1, 2015. We will miss Sam who was such a wonderful example of a life well lived, a life of service to his patients in Barre and India and to WISE in his retirement. Chris and I are making a donation to WISE in his memory and encourage others to join us. See you soon - in class…. Sue Durham sfdurham@aol.com
